FAQ's
Acupuncture is a gentle, time-honored practice that supports your body’s natural ability to heal and find balance. By focusing on the whole person, we create a path to lasting wellness that feels as restorative as it is effective.

Does it hurt?
Acupuncture needles are much thinner than those used for injections. You may feel a brief pinch followed by a dull ache or tingling, which is a sign the treatment is working.
Who is acupuncture suitable for?
Acupuncture is safe for adults of all ages and children. It is also safely used during pregnancy and alongside most conventional medical treatments.
How does acupuncture work?
Think of your body as a network of pathways, which we call meridians. Along these paths flows 'Qi'—your natural vital energy. When you are healthy and balanced, this energy moves freely. However, stress, injury, or routine life can cause blocks in these pathways, much like a kink in a garden hose. Acupuncture uses very fine, sterile needles at specific points to gently release these blocks, encouraging your body's self-healing mechanisms and restoring your natural inner flow.
What to Expect During a Treatment
1. The Consultation
We begin with a discussion about your health history and current goals. This calm space allows me to understand your unique needs and tailor the session specifically to you.
2. The Treatment
You'll rest comfortably while ultra-fine, sterile needles are placed at specific points. I also use a herb called moxibustion on some acupuncture points. Most patients find this deeply relaxing, often drifting into a light, restorative sleep.
3. Aftercare & Next Steps
After the session, we'll discuss a personalised plan. You may feel energised or peacefully heavy; both are normal as your body integrates the treatment. Resting and staying hydrated is key.
Your Safety is My Priority
Acupuncture is an incredibly safe and natural form of medicine when practiced by a qualified professional. At Kath Wilkins Acupuncture, I am fully trained, insured, and a member of the British Acupuncture Council. This means I adhere to the highest standards of hygiene and clinical practice, using only single-use, sterile, and hair-thin needles that are disposed of immediately after use. Most patients find the experience deeply relaxing, though you may feel a slight, dull tingling sensation as the needles engage with your body’s natural energy. Acupuncture is suitable for almost everyone, including during pregnancy, and any side effects are typically mild and short-lived, such as a small bruise at the needle site.
